Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT)

What is Orofacial Myology?

Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT) is an approach that addresses the root causes of persistent speech, feeding and lifestyle challenges. OMT includes specialized exercises and behavioral modifications in order to promote proper coordination of the oral musculature.

Oral Habit Elimination Programs

Oral habits can include thumb/finger sucking, nail biting, prolonged pacifier use, and extended bottle feeding. These habits significantly impact one's overall health including their oral structure, speech, airway, sleep, and chewing/swallowing function. Evidence based elimination programs along with individualized care plans are utilized to promote proper oral development.

Tongue Tie (Ankyloglossia)

Preparation and follow up care are both equally essential in optimizing the benefits of a release procedure. Therapy will focus on improving the coordination of muscles in order to achieve proper tongue resting position.

Am I a candidate for OMT?

If you or your child demonstrate any of the following challenges, it may be indicative of an orofacial myofunctional disorder (OMD) and you may be a candidate for OMT.

Picky eating

Speech/Articulation

Temporal Mandibular Disorders (jaw pain)

Headaches

Nail biting

Thumb/finger sucking

Tongue thrust

Prolonged pacifier use
